"With each Henning Mankell novel, I think this will be my last, but "Sidetracked" is #5 and as with "The White Lioness," they just keep getting better. This one was the most suspenseful; pretty gripping reading, esp. considering that Mankell insists on providing the most mundane details of his hero's life -- doing the laundry, ironing, forgetting to get the car serviced, etc. And of course his continuing dismay at how Swedish society is changing (for the worse). I'm putting another volume of Mankell on my "to read" list."
"very engrossing mystery story that is also a slice of life in Sweden. If you are looking for an interesting story to occupy a lot of your time, this is a good one. its 504 pages and perhaps a bit long. I am also a big fan of the Wallander TV shows on BBC that are actually, slightly more interesting."
"Almost at the level of numbers two and three, the fifth of the Kurt Wallander series doesn't shift outward as those did (to Latvia and South Africa) but inward on Wallander as he is somewhat successful in overcoming his demons. To me, the villain seemed slightly improbable, but as Kurt keeps pointing out, it's an ugly world out there. Despite that, this one ends on a surprisingly hopeful note. Mankell is just the greatest. I started reading these as a stopgap while waiting for my hold on Stieg Larsson's second 'The Girl Who Played with Fire' at the library, but they are more than a stopgap and transcend genre. But watch out...they're really addictive."
"After seeing Kenneth Branagh as Wallander on PBS, I decided to make the series my summer reading. Seemed to make sense to read in chronological order, which was just about my undoing. The first three in the series were tediously written, overblown, and laced with uncomfortable shifts in narrative perspective. If our local library had copies in stock, I would have given up after book #2. Happily, it doesn't, so I had to get them shipped in from around the state, which meant I felt obliged to kept reading as I had put the library through all that work. I found that as Wallander ages Mankell's philosophical overeffort tones down, and the stories become exciting. Wallander isn't a hero one really roots for, and he doesn't have any cleaver skills or quirks that the reader is smugly privy too. But he feels pretty real, and the later mixes the right amount of action and reflection about the degrading state of modern Sweden.
If you're looking for police mysteries, Wallander is worth reading. I'd start with Sidetracked or The Man Who Smiled. If you like the series enough, then go back and read the first three."
