"Summary: If geese had graves, Mother Goose would be rolling in hers. The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales retells--and wreaks havoc on--the allegories we all thought we knew by heart. In these irreverent variations on well-known themes, the ugly duckling grows up to be an ugly duck, and the princess who kisses the frog wins only a mouthful of amphibian slime. The Stinky Cheese Man deconstructs not only the tradition of the fairy tale but also the entire notion of a book. Our naughty narrator, Jack, makes a mockery of the title page, the table of contents, and even the endpaper by shuffling, scoffing, and generally paying no mind to structure. Characters slide in and out of tales; Cinderella rebuffs Rumpelstiltskin, and the Giant at the top of the beanstalk snacks on the Little Red Hen. There are no lessons to be learned or morals to take to heart--just good, sarcastic fun that smart-alecks of all ages will love."
"I think this book is a wonderful book for kids and adults alike. Children will love the silly humor and jokes in the book, and adults will enjoy reading it with/to them just as much. In addition to the book being very funny and enjoyable, there is actually quite a bit about writing that children can learn from the book. The "narrator" (Jack) talks about everything from a table of contents, to end pages of the book, to what makes up a fairy tale.
In addition to fantastic writing, there are wonderful illustrations that almost animate the book. The text becomes part of the illustrations in some parts of the book, and it's really entertaining to read.
This is a book that children will really get into and want to read over and over again."
"I discovered this one in junior high, and it has been one of my favorites ever since. Got a copy through scholastic for my daughters, and they love it, too. Such unique illustrations. Such out-of-the-box story lines. Such powerful use of characters. My girls love the red hen best, perhaps because I have a very shrilly squawky voice for her...that and how I read Jack's story to put the giant to sleep faster and faster until you can't understand a word I'm saying because I'm talking so fast and it all runs together...it puts everybody in giggles on the floor time after time. It is also a gem of a book for story tellers who take advantage of different voices and techniques. I feel like a one-woman production reading this one aloud, and I LOVE it."
"A very funny book of fractured fairy tales. The humor actually spills over to the front and back covers, the dedications page and the table of contents. I think the idea of these tales works best if the child is familiar with the tales they're based on. The humor works well because it plays off the expectations of where a story goes, but then provides an abrupt, unexpected, often ironic ending, which is often highly entertaining. Toward the middle of the book, the stories start to seem repetitive and not as well written. But they pick up toward the end, especially with the title story."
