"If you've never read this adventure story first published in 1930 then you're missing out. Four children, during their summer break in the country, are given permission to be seafaring adventurers, setting up camp on a small island for many days on end. I won't spoil the fun by telling the plot, but just know that by the end of the book you'll have learned plenty about sailing and you'll be inspired to swap your city living for the rusticity and surprise one finds in the country.
If only our children could have holidays like these. It's worth it to try to figure out a way to make it happen..."
"Read it to my nine-year-old daughter before bedtime. It took us months to get through, but we both enjoyed it a great deal. I'm not sure what's so engaging about it; the story moves very slowly, but it gives a window into the adventures of four English children on a holiday during World War I. I think Ransome does an incredible job painting a realistic yet appealing world you want to live in. It's also an interesting window into early twentieth century British life. Of course it so far pre-dates the politically correct movement that it's hardly culturally sensitive, but overall a fun read. We've started the second book in the series..."
"Six children camp out on their very own island and have a series of piratical adventures, both real and imagined.
Pure delightful fun, right from the first page. Full of kids with good sense and great imaginations, and the best kind of adults who aid and abet where needed. And not often ruined by the dubious 1929 background gender and race issues, either. I'm not always the best judge of what kids will like, but I enjoyed the heck out of this now and I would have loved it when I was ten."
"One of my all-time favorite book, about kids in England's Lake District camping, sailing, and marauding. Ransome is so good with details that you'll almost feel the water on your fingers and the wind in your face, smell the smoke of the campfires, and see the great green hills rising all around you. You'll also come away knowing how to sail a boat, make a camp, and build a fire. Spend a few hours sailing through a Lake District summer with the Swallows and Amazons--you'll never regret it."
