Description: Softcover. Reading copy. The lost story of 600 Jews who revolted against their murderers and burned a Nazi death camp to the ground. "Through Mr. Steiner, who interviewed many survivors, the world at large will now hear this story of utmost horror and supreme courage. "-New York Review of Books. Translated into English from the French by Helen Weaver. read more
"This book is a powerful piece of "creative nonfiction" in the best sense of the term. Steiner interviewed the 40 people who survived the killing machine of Treblinka to reconstruct the story of the camp and the prisoner revolt that all but destroyed the it. The book is very well-written and is easily as gripping as any novel. Treblinka, which existed as an extermination camp, was responsible for the deaths of 800,000 (or more) people. That these prisoners survived the conditions there, and were able to foment a revolt that led to the escape of 600 prisoners (of whom 40 survived to the end of the war) is an amazing tribute to the human spirit. Definitely worth reading."
"This was an extremely graphic account. I thought is was going to be a story of triumph, but it was a story of tragedy, and about 15 pages at the very end of triumph. If you're looking for a feel-good book, keep looking!"
"This book will chill you to your soul. The one part that stands out in my mind is where the little boy finds his father upon arriving to the camp and his father tells his son to go and "take his shower with everyone else." That will break any father's heart."
"This book was very sad. The only heroic part of the book is when there was a reolt, when the Jews burned down a gas chamber. The plot is awesome though. It was a little hard to undeerstand though. IOtherwise, it was a great book."
