About this title: As various animals notice the geese flying south for the winter, they make their own preparations for the season. For example, the rabbits eat plenty of cabbage leaves and carrot tops so they can grow thick fur coats and the chipmunk climbs into her underground burrow which she spent the summer filling with a supply of seeds and nuts. When winter finally arrives, the deer scour the woods for food to eat. Color and b&w illustrations accompany the text. Winner of the 1949 Caldecott Medal.

"A nicely illustrated book that talks about the winter migration, hibernation, and foraging habits of various animals in a Northern climate. It's a bit long, but very informative and has a nice story."
"This is a great book for animal lovers. The illustrations are realistic (not cartoonish) and children will enjoy learning how the woodland creatures prepare for winter. I recommend this book for older children, ages 4 and up, because smaller children would probably get bored. Sidenote: Caldecott Winner from 1949"
"This is a very pretty and educational book that gives a glimpse into the lives of various woodland creatures as they prepare for winter - some fly south, some prepare for hibernation and others remain and forage for food in the snow. I personally really enjoyed this book - the illustrations are cute and realistic and the text is entertaining and informative. But I have to classify this as an advanced picture book for slightly older children because it a little dry in spots (it doesn't really tell a story as much as it informs) and it will likely try the patience of most preschoolers.
