"Doctorow displays a deft hand in writing about the trials and travails of a young boy who finds his destiny as a member of the notorious Dutch Schultz gang. We are immersed in the boy and the aldult voice of that same child and can easily distinguish between the two. Doctorow makes us smell the streets of New York and the open spaces of Onondaga County. While the narrative is sometimes pulled off course by the vagaries of minor characters it is an entertaining read."
"E.L. Doctorow is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. His writing is so honest and perceptive. This book had me right on the first page. The characters were very believable and I felt like I was right there in the 1930's. Great book."
"Per Doctorow, the language is dense and the syntax spirals on. Yet, rather than alienating or being at odds with the narrator and story, it actually makes both epic. I love the rendering of 1930s America, and I love the idea of a mob story beginning on the decline of the characters--it's more like Greek tragedy as opposed to Shakespearean (I knew things were going to fall apart, but the question was how), except of course for Bathgate. The final sentence was killer."
