"The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic picture book that appeals to children because of its colorful, vibrant artwork and the development of the "hungry caterpillar." The story introduces and teaches "counting" to children through the numbers and days of the week. Eric Carle demonstrates the transformation of the caterpillar to a butterfly as he eats and eats and eats! As the caterpillar eats a variety of food, he eventually eats through the pages of the book. Every page has a hole in it where the caterpillar eats through the food. The pages for the first five days are different sizes, corresponding with the number of pieces of food the caterpillar eats. The page for the day the caterpillar eats one apple is very small, a little bigger for the day it eats two pears, and full size for the day it eats five oranges. The caterpillar eventually gets a terrible stomach ache and hibernates in a cacoon for weeks until he emerges into a beautiful butterfly.
Carle's use of colorful illustrations are part of what make this book award winning; without the creative edge of the artwork, the story would not be as effective and memorable to all that read it. I read this as a child and I remember the illustration and creative design of the book more than anything else. The Very Hungry Caterpillar will always be one of my childhood favorites."

Summary: A little caterpillar eats his way to a beautiful butterfly in this famous and beloved book by Eric Carle.

Curriculum Connection: 1st graders work in groups to create their own versions of this book. Each child chooses a new food that the caterpillar eats, then writes the paragraph for that food. Using the original as a model, the new pages are put together so that there is a hole going through each illustration of the foods the students chose, just like in the book. (This has been done before with a guided reading group of first graders and looks great as a class book.)
Issues Addressed: the changing life of a caterpillar on his way to becoming a butterfly
Classroom Uses: guided reading, read aloud
Summary: A caterpillar is well on his way to becoming a butterfly. This book captures the story of the change that takes place during the metamorphosis of a caterpillar. No matter how much the caterpillar eats, he is still hungry. By the end of the week, the poor caterpillar is stricken with a bad tummy ache. Soon he has eaten so much, that he has become fat and decides to build a home (a cocoon). Two weeks later, he emerges from his cocoon as a beautiful butterfly.
Text and image: The illustrations in this book are amazing. They go hand in hand with the text to tell the story of the caterpillar. The illustrations are also interactive because there are actual holes in the pictures to show where the the caterpillar has eaten. This really gets the attention of readers.
