About this title: By the time Pearl Harbour had ripped apart America's peacetime pretensions, the German blitzkrieg had already blasted the Red Army back to the gates of Moscow. Yet, less than four years later, the Soviet hammer-and-sickle flew above the ruins of Berlin, stark symbol of a miraculous comeback that destroyed the German army and shattered Hitler's imperial designs. Told in swift stirring prose, "When Titans Clashed" provides an account of this epic struggle from the "Soviet" perspective. David Glantz, one of the foremost authorities on the Soviet military, and Jonathan House present a ...

"While David Glanyz's books have tremendous amounts of information in them, they can be difficult to wade through as well. Still good for some one looking for s good history of the Eastern Front in WWII."
"World war 2 in Russia was the most savage conflict in human history. The average soldier was trapped between an enemy who routinely murdered and tortured prisoners and the military police of their own army who would kill people at random for the crime of retreating. 'When Titans Clashed' is an account of the military operations of that conflict. The authors have used the unprecedented access granted to researchers during the brief Yeltsin thaw to amass a lot of facts about the Red Army that were previously state secrets. The focus of the book is the doctrine, strategy and tactics of the Red Army and how they overcame their German adversaries. On the military level the book is flawless; the development of a winning strategy and tactics to act on it is well told. The authors make a very plausible case that the Germans never had the ability to defeat the Soviet Union with the tactics that worked so well in short campaigns in the small countries of Europe. They follow the struggle from the first attacks to the last days in the ruins of Berlin. What is missing in this book, and most of the others on this subject, is the human dimension. One yearns for a Shelby Foote to give a human face to the struggles for power in the Soviet High Command. The vicious, brutal nature of the Soviet and Nazi regimes is occasionally referred to but isnt a part of this book. Some of the great human disasters that took place arent even mentioned. This is a war defined by unit designations and arrows crawling across the map.If you're a buff, read it."
"Okay...but it has some odd fact-checking/knowledge errors (calling the Elefant a Tiger, for example). Also, you had best like long (paragraphs long, at times) lists of units and commanders taking part in a given battle.
One thing the authors do well is make an argument for the growing proficiency of the Red Army in WWII. Their victory over Germany was not simply a matter of throwing lots of men at the Wehrmacht...although that didn't hurt."
