"I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, and even though some of the subject matter was a little heavy, for the most part this was a light-hearted book. When the subject matter was heavier, I thought the author did a wonderful job writing about those subjects without making anything feel forced or sappy.
I read some of the other reviews on goodreads that said people couldn't stand how naive Novalee was. I think that was the whole point of the book. She did make some stupid decisions because she was young and naive, but she matured throughout the book and the reader got to see her progress.
The names were a little unbelievable but they added to the charm of the book.
The movie stays very true to the book. I saw the movie first, and I did not notice any major differences that annoyed me. The changes I did notice were more like combining events. Also, I don't remember Moses Whitecotton in the movie, but I haven't seen it in years and that might be why."
"Since I have such a limited choice of titles, I was happy to find a book that said it was one of Oprah's. It didn't phase me in the least that her bookclub has been trashed by other reviewers in Goodreads, but I did have some pause when I found few cover reviews by well-respected/"erudite" critics and when the blurbs were heavy on the "feel-good" aspects of the book. I thought, "Watch out. This is really gonna be a sappy one."
Well, maybe it was... but I loved it! It reminded me of a little more grown-up "Daisy Mae & the Miracle Man" & I found I'd finished the book before I even entered it in my "currently reading" slot!
I liked the plot and the dialogue and - whereas, maybe, Novalee herself was portrayed as just a bit too sweet to be true - I thought Lott's characterization of Lexie and her family to be just excellent. I'm reminded at this juncture, of how Lexie's kids were describe as huddled together in a cafe booth "like gummibears." What a perfect analogy for them!
The book did indeed make me laugh and make me cry. It gave me a couple 'Ah yes' moments, as well. And, I guess, that's enough for me!"
"It's almost a genre, right? Feelgood, dogood, with a happy ending. The bad people exit stage left in a hurry and are never allowed to do permanent damage because love conquers all, good intentions count, and all bitter comes with a double dose of sweet.
I like the way Billie Letts basically tells the same story again and again. It's a sweet story, a nice break from more "realistic" and of course far deeper examinations of human nature. And she tells it with heart. The author shows through her characters and, since she's a darn likeable author, that's cool by me.
I was listening to an NPR piece about "genre busters," the other day; authors who, like Ursula LeGuin, get pigeonholed into a genre but accomplish far more than the genre requires. Seems to me there are two ways to be a genre buster: you either offer far more substance, or you craft your story far better, than your genre requires. Billie Letts is a solid craftsman, better than your average bear. I'm not sure she's quite deft enough that I'd call her a genre buster, but at the very least she's in the top ranks of her genre.
Ohh, and let's call the genre, Oprah sugar (because there's also an Oprah vinegar)!"
