"I get to rock a mean Rich Little with my various voices for the different animals in hiding (the 3 penguins always get my best 3 nephews of Popeye impersonation)and my kids get to have fun ripping off the flaps at each page.
"Spot's mom goes looking for him because it's time for dinner. She looks in the box, under the stairs, and in a basket but he is nowhere to be found. After searching the whole house she finally finds him and spot eats his dinner. This is a classic favorite for all toddlers. This board book has flaps that your child can lift as you search for spot in the story. I remember reading this book as a child and I loved it. It's a simple story with a predictive ending that you can read over and over again."
"Where's Spot? is about a dog looking for Spot the puppy. The adult dog looks in many different places until Spot is found. This book is fun for infants because the caregiver can help him or her pull up all the flaps to check and see if Spot is hiding on each page. The pictures aren't very intriguing so I worry that this may not be the perfect book but the flaps on each page make it a good one in my opinion."
"Where's Spot? by Eric Hill is an early childhood toy book about a mom looking for her son, Spot. The front cover of the book has the mom looking into a chest box, similar to how young kids like to play hide and seek. Kids will connect to this upon looking at the cover. It also draws the reader into wondering where Spot is. What I like about the book is that it involves younger readers in the reading process. Each page is a simple question, asking the reader if Spot can be found in various places, such as behind a door. The hiding place that is mentioned has a flap that the child can open to see who is behind the particular place, getting the child involved in seeing if they can find Spot and also to see/say who is hiding there. This also teaches them new vocabulary words. The concept of finding someone through using flaps in the book to look for them reminds me of another board book, Teletubbies Play Hide-And-Seek: A Lift-The-Flap Book, which was made by the Itsy Bitsy Entertainment Company. In this book, the reader has to find out where one of the Teletubbies are hiding, through a series of repetitive questions. The only problem with the flap method in books like this is that some kids do not pay attention to what is being read to them and instead, go straight towards trying to open the flap!
Each question or sentence in the book has pictures that take up two full pages of the book, putting greater emphasis on what is being said in that particular part of the story. The drawings are also very simple, with pictures outlined in black and painted inside. The background is completely white, only pictures of what the author is trying to emphasize in the text being drawn, everything else is simply not there. This helps readers (or those who are newly exposed to books) know what they should be focusing on, as there are no pointless drawings in the background that detach from what the story is saying. The book also does not have extra blank pages in the front or back, nor a synopsis of the story or information on the author, as it begins with the story and ends with the story. This makes it simple for younger kids to read and access the pages they want to look at quickly, instead of rummaging through extra informational pages they cannot read, do not understand, or care for. The pages itself are thicker than other picture books, probably to prevent kids from tearing the book easily, since they do not know how to turn pages well. What is particularly adorable about this book is that towards the end, the mom thinks she has found Spot and so does the reader (The hump under the rug looks as though it could be a dog, but it is actually a turtle.). I can see the younger children smiling or staring blankly at the book during this scene, confused to why Spot is not there.
The text itself is in a large and simple font, which are bolded, making it easy to see and read for younger kids. Personally, I feel that any part of this book could be read as a read aloud. Also, because it is short(about nine pages),this makes it a quick and easy read. The book also has the same line of questioning that gets repeated, starting with "Is he.." This makes it easy for kids to memorize and read along with the reader or to themselves even if they do not know the words. In addition, it helps to build necessary sight words that the kids will often come into contact with in their readings.
The questions in the book also help to address a certain word when the reader is asked where Spot is, such as if he was under the rug. This book can be used as a good way to teach vocabulary words during reading, as the drawings connect the word to the picture for students. Students can use other vocabulary words to write their own book, using a question to ask where Spot or anything else they want to find is. This can help them learn to write full sentences. For kids in preschool, who are not as advanced, they can draw a picture of what the word may look like."
