"Terkel, Studs. Working. New York; The New Press; 1972. I sit here now in my small motel room, just having completed the most relevant book of my career. Studs Terkel's Working is thick with narratives of Americans in every profession, job, position that could be imagined. This is responsible journalism, eloquent, simple, beautiful. Studs has a way of getting out of the way of the interview, of drawing people out, of capturing them rightly on the page. Recently I had the audacity of entitling a paper I wrote for work, A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SOCIAL ARSONIST, there I stated, My job is to meet with people across California and figure out what moves them, why they do what they do. There amidst the variations of a kitchen table, lazy couch, or occasional pristine Starbucks, I have found that unfortunately this thing of being moved is contagious. They get inspired to act, I get inspired, and now I can't help but share these stories, they boil over keeping me up at night bringing me here to confess all that I've been able to absorb. After reading Working I wanted to somehow take that paper back. I realize now what I did wrong. I was there as I am here in this annotation. I am everywhere, Terkel makes room for the personalities that come up; the harsh gritty nuances that can only show themselves without judgment or agendas. The effect is a feeling of deep understanding with all of humanity. The effect is revolutionary. I laughed at the young newspaper boys disdain for people and dogs, I was appalled by the working conditions of janitors in old snowy buildings, I had deep respect for the jockeys diligence in his athleticism, I admired waitress', telephone operators, nannies. I admired people content in idleness. Not only were his interviews frank and moving but what I learned in the end is that what I admire most about people is their spirit, their spunk irregardless of their paycheck. I entered with curiosity and walked away completely satiated feeling closer to every American that has ever done something they loved, or hated, ever done anything at all and developed an opinion about it. Terkel's Working is the best argument for listening there ever was."
"This book is amazing and was really hard for me to read. To have the skin of so many on mine makes me feel heavy. Maybe it's trite to say, but what I learned is that life isn't fair, which is revealed over and over again in these testimonies. Maybe this book struck a chord with me because I am always conflicted about what to do with my career, relationships, self and I am never clear on what I should be aspiring to. Use your head, follow your heart?"
"Terkel, who died last fall (October 2008), was the quintessential "everyman's historian." Working is a clever history of Americans' attitudes about work, their jobs, and employment in general. Terkel is particularly adept at getting people to open up to him, and it really shows in the results."
"This book is worth the fame it gained 20 or years ago when it was first published. Anyone who is interested, afraid of, puzzled or otherwise curious about job and career actualities should give this a good look-- it's a pretty extensive survey of current work experience and types."
