About this title: In downtown Manhattan, a gruesome discovery has just been made - an underground charnel house containing the bones of murder victims. Research reveals that a serial killer was at work in New York's notorious Five Points neighbourhood in the 1880's, bent on prolonging his lifespan by any means. When a newspaper story on the old murders appears to ignite a new series of horrifyingly similar killings, panic overtakes New York City. Now, FBI agent Pendergast, journalist Bill Smithback, and archaeologists Nora Kelly join forces to protect themselves from a vicious killer...before they become the ...

"Okay...I gave it a 5 star. Not many of those on my list, but I gave Relic a 4 and the only way to up that was a 5. I'm a little surprised at myself for the rating. This is a very good read and I have it on my shelf. I obtained it after listening to the audio (in a vehicle). I only do that if I figure I'll possibly reread at some point.
The atmosphere in this book combined with the imaginative story line is, if not great, just short of it. These books seem to have a largely female readership... No reason for that guys. They're well done and this one is (in my mond) the best so far. They're not mystery genre but border on several generes from there to paranormal...possibly edging into urban fantasy. Good books, really."
"I do love the Preston/Child books. Pendergast is such an interesting character, the writing and descriptions are a few steps above your typical beach thriller, and the action just keeps coming. I especially love how often the protagonists wind up running through deserted areas of museums desperately trying to escape the evil-du-jour. If I were planning the perfect murder mystery night I would totally set it up in a history museum after closing- maybe Preston and Child could negotiate something as a sideline business?"
"So far, so good, though I'm only a little ways into this one so far. The main character of FBI Agent Pendergast has already been established in other books by the authors, though I don't feel left out in the dark yet (this is the first book I've ever read by the authors). A murder mystery with supernatural tendencies...? I'm actually not sure yet since I just started it.
Just finished the book and it was pretty good. The authors do a great job of creating solid characters, complete with their own unique foibles and strengths. Agent Pendergast is an especially interesting character and someone the authors have used in their stories a lot. It would be interesting to know more about Pendergast..."
"Not sure what I'm supposed to be feeling, here. Couldn't put it down once it really started going. Odd story, and Pendergast is unusual. Would like to see more of him. Liked the other characters too, and want more of Nora. Not so much with Smithback.
A bit long, though.
Update: It took some talking over with friends to realize my problem with the plot. The story was TOO fantastical. Authors sometimes take an out-there idea and run with it. Fine, I'm used to that. This one took more than one idea, so I'm left with several extreme plot points. That takes away from the book, in my opinion. Let me believe one or two unbelievable things, that's about my limit. Five is pushing it."
