"The Dirt: Confessions of the Worlds Most Notorious Rock Band Motley Crue Pages: 448 ISBN:0060989157
There aren't any bands in the world that compare to the hard-core nature of Motley Crue. An autobiography of the band with the ups and downs of the band, encounters with the law, and many other events that occurred off stage.
Finally, an autobiography of a band. Recently I've been listening to bass solos, and I happened to come across the name, Nikki Six, Motley Crue's bassist, and founder. When I was watching Vh1, i stumbled across Tommy Lee, the drummer of the band. The show i was watching showed Tommy's outrageous behavior, and i was interested in finding out more about the band.
Nikki Six, had gotten together with Tommy Lee and son they started looking to hire a guitarist, and frontman. They hired Mick Mars, and a member of the previous band said " this is a motley looking crew" later became the band name, Motley Crue. They soon became more popular as they started performing in popular events. They were also known for their heavy metal looking groupies.
I thought that this is an interesting book because this is an autobiography, and there are no conspiracy theories that you would see in biographies. I thought that it was pretty strange also how they were able to talk about their negative side too. I'm not very into metal, but from reading this book i found a new understanding of Motley Crue's music, and why it was written and what it was written about.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes punk rock, or hard rock, or anyone who is looking to expand their knowledge on music. This is book was overall pretty good, talking about band experiences, and how fame can be different for different type of people. After all, the title of the book is " The Dirt""
"This is THE BEST non-fiction book I have ever read not to mention THE BEST rock and roll bio I have ever read and I have a thing for rock bios (check my shelves). I love the captivating, raunchy, steamy tales of back stage and tour bus antics!
The Dirt raised the bar for books of this genre. Not only is it written in a strikingly frank, no holds barred fashion--it is also written by all four original band members. They ALL get their say and yeah...sometimes their stories don't exactly "mesh."
Some highlights: The first chapter description of an early band apartment; Mick Mars hilarious one liners regarding his beloved band mates; Tommy Lee talking about Heather Locklear and Pam Anderson; Vince Neil's take on being booted from the band as well as his candid account of the death of his daughter. And then there is Nikki, sigh. His chapters were raw with torment but at the same time, there was an undercurrent of wisdom and peace."
"Before reading "The Dirt," my knowledge of the Crue didn't really expand beyond knowing Tommy Lee was the drummer and vaguely remembering the words to "Shout at the Devil" and "Girls, Girls, Girls."
While it's not difficult to guess what you're getting into before you even open this book, there's a serious part to it that took me by surprise. Long after the drug-addled days of booze and babes, the four Crue kids hit hard times in their adulthood, taking on personal battles including struggling with bone disease and the death of a daughter. Each guy has their story to tell and you get a much different side of Mick, Nikki, Tommy and Vince.
The four last star was left off for the details on degrading women. Knowing the reputation of hair bands and the groupie acts of rock n' roll, you could get a sense of where things were going without having to read the gritty details, but then it's also called "The Dirt" for a reason."
"Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee and Mich Mars make up Motley Crue. One of the most seemingly decadent hair metal bands from the 80's. "The Dirt" is basically the story of their debauchery from the very beginnings through their epic success during the Dr. Feelgood era to their flame-out. The book is written in almost a diary form. It moves chronologically and takes turns giving each person's point of view of certain situations. Everyone gets their voice heard including their various managers and even short-lived Vince Neil replacement John Corabi. Oddly, none of the ex-wives or ex-girlfriends get a chance to speak out. I'd be curious to know just what think of how they were depicted. The Crue-ers are most definitely thorough in describing the nearly stereotypical rock-n-roll lifestyle. Not very many stories don't have some combination of drugs and sex and booze in mass quantities. But besides all of that there's quite a lot of humanity found here also. Through the death of Vince Neil's daughter or Mick Mar's trying to deal with a bone disease that is robbing him of his mobility and leaves him in constant pain. Nikki Sixx's discovery that his sister is still alive, after believing her dead most of his life or Tommy Lee's near-childlike search for unconditional love and it's heartbreaking consequences. That's actually the most intriguing part of the book. It's fun to read about the madness that followed these guys everywhere. But it's interesting to see humanity of these guys. I only wish there was a little more of it actually. If you like rock-n-roll at all you should give this book a read. It goes by rather quickly which, to me, is a true sign of a well-written book. It's interesting to see the lives behind these big names you only see in bold type in magazines and newspapers. I absolutely recommend it."
