About this title: This is a memoir of Ghada Karmi's life: her childhood in Palestine, the flight to Britain after the catastrophe of 1948 and coming-of-age in the coffee bars of Golders Green, the middle-class Jewish quarter in North London. With humour, she describes the bizarre and sometimes tense realities that mask her life in "Little Tel Aviv" and, later, the struggle for her, as for many other women in the late 1950s, to get a university grant to study medicine. The book is set against the backdrop of the continuing crisis in the Middle East. As Karmi grew older, and especially after the 1967 war, ...

"I think it is very easy to dismiss the Israeli-Palestinian situation as impossible and too complex to think about for very long and, as such, it seems like those who have nothing personal invested in it don't care much. This book makes you care."
"Ghada tells us her story from her childhood in Palestine, to her adolescences life in UK and then her university life. She takes us through her experience of losing a home, fighting to "fit-in" and then trying to find her rooots back. The story is amazing and it forces you to flip the page to know what would happen next. Definitely a must-read book if you want to know the story of Palestinian in this Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Being an Arab, we grow up feeling for Palestinians. We taught by them, friends with them and now working with them. We can't forget that its an Arab land that was taken away. However, I would be honest with you, in the last couple of years my passion towards the Palestinian conflict was not as strong as it was when I was young. Mainly, due to the moves Palestinians make in their lands. The Fatah- Hamas fighting is just silly in my opinion and it just takes the focus out of the real conflict. This book, brought this passion back. It just heart breaking to hear the story all over again from a first hand wittinessand with such details. I cant imagine someone stealing a ring from me, what about my home, land and everything I own!!
Another thing that puzzled me and made me really ache, was that the one day enemies became the next day friends, and how can a story of people dislocated and killed be forgotten this fast!
I hope its translated into Arabic, and I hope every Arab reads it, because it just reminds us of a land we are lost, and we are loosing daily. I also hope that Palestinians themselves will get their act together and find a way to get their land back, peacefully I hope."
"pada awalnya saya pikir buku ini pure mengenai pencarian fatimah yg menjadi pembantu keluarga tokoh utama ini. namun ternyata tidak, kisah nyata ini hanya menceritakan kisah tokoh aku dengan pelariannya ke inggris selama beberapa waktu lamanya hingga mampir kembali ke 'israel' tempat dia dahulu tingga (dulu masih menjadi palestina)...."
"Beautifully descriptive. An excellent snapshot of the trajectory of a Palestinian family from the 1930's to the present. An interesting way to become familiar with the occupation of Palestine and what it means to be a refugee."
