"This could be good for teenage girls too. Really the teens are both thinking the same thoughts. The girls just wonder why the guys are not talking to them, when really the boys are often struck mute by their own fears. It does not mean they do not like the girls. The unintended silence can squash a young girl. And often these are the boys who will treat a girl with respect. This book lets both genders know they are normal and these scenes are more common than they think. Good books bring up these universal themes, without trying to give advice. It really is not needed."
"So coming off of the high of the book thief, this book is a total opposite end of the spectrum! The first chapter talks about a teenage boy who obviously can't wait to lose his virginity and about the all the angst that comes with it. I really didn't have any interest in continuing reading the book. I have 4 brothers, 3 sons and a husband. I KNOW I really don't WANT to know what adolenscent boys think about!
If this book is TOTALLY worthwhile, and I'm jumping the gun here, give me a hollah! Otherwise, this little guy is staying on the bookshelves."
"Yes, I know its a YA book. Yes, its plainly written, no fancy words, no intricate plot with people killing each other, and a surprise who-dun-it at the end. But its a story about a boy, an awkward boy, that is totally the underdog who can feel himself, his skin growing and his mind coming alive. Its about the girl he wants, the family he doesn't always understand and the words trapped inside him. He wants to break free and he wants a girl. I found the entire story elegant and profound. It resonated at so many levels, and the characters were so lovable and real that I could reach out and touch them. I wish I could have read it when I was sixteen."
"I love Zusak. His characters are easy for me to relate to--and always very human. Even when they are putzes they are loveable ones.
Not only is Cameron a bit of an oddball, a sometimes-loner who likes to walk around town at night and a sensitive writerly dude unlike his more athletic brothers, but he is a bit awkward with the ladies. He reminds me a lot of myself back when I was a teenager. Of course, the description of his hair was the icing on the comparable cake: "I like your hair, Cameron. I like how it sticks up no matter how hard you try to keep it down. It's the one thing you can't hide."
Yeah. That was me back in high school--all shadow. Thank god for the people in my life, especially the "girl I got"--no, the "girl I found." Now I am full of light. I have hope for young Cameron, too."
