"I have a feeling one loves or hates this book --- I was on the hate side of the fence. I agree with other viewers who note that the author is condescending. I tried to read the book in earnest, as the author suggests in slow amounts. But really, it is just packaging religion in a more digestible format without actually putting forth its own set of tenants. If you have a basic understanding of religions of the world the book will probably be just annoying. If you are new anything spiritual maybe it is the introduction you need...
I think this book would be a good read if you are a bit less sarcastic than I am (maybe I would like it in about 20 years?)... it would probably also be a good read if you are constantly on the go and never sit down to look around... if you do sit down to look around the book is pretty much useless and comes off as new age drivel; if you do not stop to smell the roses maybe this book is exactly what you need to start enjoying life's ups and downs as they roll on in."
"An endorsement by Oprah Winfrey helped to increase sales, and over two million copies have been sold. The author, Eckhart Tolle, was born in Germany and educated at the Universities of London and Cambridge. He does not claim to be a member of any specific religion. He uses principles from Christianity and Buddhism, A Coarse in Miracles and The Bible. Ekhart Tolle assures the readers that "You are here to enable the divine purpose of the universe to unfold. That is how important you are!"
In chapter 1, Tolle states: "you are not your mind" and that the greatest obstacle to enlightenment is the mind. He claims that identifying with what's on our mind creates a barrier due to labels, images, and judgments that cross our consciousness. Tolle tells the reader to remember that "you are one with all this is." In reference to this oneness, Tolle says that the mental movies complete with inner-voice soundtrack is a "result of all your past history as well as of the collective cultural mind-set you inherited." Tolle encourages the reader to be in the here and now, to be alert and aware but not thinking, just like in meditation. He states that success with this practice can be measured by the degree of "peace that you feel within." In order to achieve enlightenment, Tolle tells the reader to "rise above thought."
His book is a dichotomy of his beliefs: He tells readers to pause between chapters to mull over the concepts while telling us that our troubles arise because we think too much. He says we analyze too much, then tells us in chapter 4: "Make it a habit to monitor your mental-emotional state through self-observation." Isn't that analyzing?
Chapter 8 could cause controversy. Tolle says that "women are closer to enlightenment" than men because "it is easier for a woman to feel and be in her body." Tolle dares to explore the menstrual cycles as painful due to the collective consciouness of being subjugated and exploited by men. Furthermore, Tolle states:"The number of women who are now approaching the fully conscious state already exceeds that of men." How is that measured? Many books are written about the power of the present (versus reflecting on the past and/or planning for the future); about embracing the journey (versus focusing on the destination); and about enjoying the process (versus focusing on the product). "This book changed my life - but not overnight. Its message is so profoundly different to what most of us are familiar with that it can take months for it to sink in (and several readings) and for it to be something that we can actually practice on a daily basis. But it is well worth the effort. Eckhart Tolle points out repeatedly that our uncontrolled, undisciplined mind is the greatest enemy we have and that we must bring it under control if we are to enjoy our life. There is, however, much more to his message than just that. He explains how the concept of time, which, to him (and to millions of Buddhists), is an illusion and to live your life by it is to miss out on the peace and satisfaction that is derived by living wholly in the Now. If you live your life dwelling on the past, he says, you are probably ruled by regrets or guilt or a sense of being a victim, all of which is totally pointless; on the other hand, if you think mainly of what the future holds for you, then you are likely not smelling the roses on the way there and you miss out on what life has to offer you right now, or you will be consumed by anxieties and fears that may never happen (although, if you know about the law of attraction, you will understand that they will because you are creating them by your focus upon them). Tolle teaches that the way out of the trap of time is complete surrender to the now, the present. Such surrender is not passive; it is, in fact, a very active and conscious choice to allow what is, and that ain't easy. If you think it is, try it next time something is happening that you don't like. You will then see that everything in you will protest and your mind will go ..."But he shouldn't do that to me.." or "but I don't want to have to do that..." That is resistance, and Tolle points out that it is complete insanity to resist what happens and yet, when you think about it, that is what many of us do a large part of every day, whether it's hating the people you work with, hating your actual job, hating where you live, and so on. Such resistance brings continual suffering, even if that suffering is relatively mild as in feelings of irritation, frustration, or dislike. The Power of Now will teach you how and why you should actually accept all that happens, and, further, that such acceptance does not mean that you can't make changes or set goals, because you can; you will take whatever action is necessary and then let it go and be fully present in the now again. One concept Tolle writes about that particularly resonated with me is what he calls the `pain body'. Sometimes he makes it sound like an entity that possesses someone, like an evil spirit, which made me squirm a bit, but he is not suggesting that at all. He is, I think, merely trying to get us to look at the emotional baggage we carry around and see the incredible destruction such baggage can cause to ourselves and those around us. By embracing his teachings about time, though, we can be freed from such destruction and thus live a much happier life. In fact, he teaches us to observe ourselves at all times, not just when we need healing. Such observation leads ultimately to a sense of our own spirituality because there has to be a part of ourselves doing the observing in the first place and what is that if it isn't something outside the realm of mind and body? Another thing this book did for me was shed a most luminious light on the sayings of Christ, sayings that I have been familiar with all my life but really had quite limited understanding of. For example, Tolle claims that 'the peace of God that passes all understanding; turn the other cheek' are expressions of being prepared to surrender to what is in life. Christ constantly extolled his listeners not to worry 'for worry will not add a day to your life'. Tolle made me see that the practice of surrender to the now will eliminate the tendency to worry because that is something that is almost always done about some imaginary event in the future. If you have had an absolute gutsful of the way your life never seems to go right, if you have come to realise that the way you approach life may have something to do with that and you want to change it, then you are ready for this book. But remember the ad for Pantene shampoo (or do we only get that down here in the South Pacific?) - it won't happen overnight, but it will happen"
