"This was such a fun read, though very light. It only took me one evening to read it. I was laughing a lot and this is more of a summer novel when you are on holidays, sitting at the beach, needing something light and fun. If this would have been with heterosexual characters, i am sure i'd have heard about it bevore because the format is really interesting as are the characterisations of the main and side characters."
Now I have to figure out a way to become a gay man, encounter two men that flip my world upside down without leaving my bedroom, obtain some sort of world saving degree, befriend playwrights, Prada wearing hard to get women, throw in there a way beyond his years eleven year old and I would have lived Almost Like Being in Love.
A high school jock and nerd fall in love senior year, only to part after an amazing summer of discovery to attend their respective colleges. They keep in touch at first, but then slowly drift apart. Flash forward twenty years.
Travis and Craig both have great lives, careers, and loves. But something is missing .... Travis is the first to figure it out. He's still in love with Craig, and come what may, he's going after the boy who captured his heart, even if it means forsaking his job, making a fool of himself, and entering the great unknown. Told in narrative, letters, checklists, and more, this is the must-read novel for anyone who's wondered what ever happened to that first great love.
After avoiding each other for three years, Travis and Craig become friends and lovers their senior year in high school. Travis loves Broadway shows and Ethel Merman. Craig is a baseball-playing jock. At first, they don't seem to fit together, but as they grow closer, it's easy to see just how right they are for each other.
Then, college and approximately 3,000 miles separates the two of them, and they spend the next twenty years living apart. Even though they build new lives, they still have those "What if?" moments every now and then. Travis finally gives into those feelings and sets off on a cross-country trip to find Craig. Along the way, the author gives us Travis's and Craig's stories through letters, memos, and checklists. There's an amusing set of secondary characters. Kluger does a fantastic job of characterizing Craig, Travis, and their friends. I'd love to know all of them in real life, especially Noah.
This is a book about many different types of relationships; it's not the typical romance novel. Kluger's writing style is witty and engaging. This book isn't the m/m erotica that I usually read. In fact, there's no explicit sex anywhere in the book. The blurb for this book wasn't one that really sucked me in and made me say, "I MUST read this!" I was a tad iffy about the format of the book. However, I kept seeing good reviews and decided to give it a chance. I am so glad that I did."
"This was a cute and warm romance. I found the beginning very hard to follow, though, and the voices pretty similar throughout. It was fun to read, and a nice distraction. This one would be great for an afternoon on an airplane, or a day a the beach. The resolution redeems the book entirely."
