"This is a tough book to review. It was really fascinating to me to hear about Nicholas Sparks' life. It was emotional and unbelievable that anyone could go through so much sadness in their life. As with most of his books, this one got me teary eyed a few times. The story itself goes through his trip around the world with his brother, most of which I found a little boring. Then, intertwined is the story of his life, that part was good. I found myself skimming, or skipping all together, a lot of the trip part. It's kind of ironic that a trip around the world would make someone feel better, and be closer to their brother. If I were a millionaire, I would probably feel the same way. It seems a bit unrealistic for regular people to ever get to experience that type of adventure. Sadly, I would have probably enjoyed the book more it I were just hearing about his life growing up. Overall, I think he needs to stick to fiction. That's where his true talent lies."
"In 2002, Nicholas Sparks received a pamphlet in the mail from Notre Dame, his alma mater, about a three week, around the world trip they were sponsoring. The trip looked wonderful, and Nicholas couldn't get it out of his mind. He knew that he and his wife couldn't go, since they had five small children, so he decided to invite his brother. In January and February 2003, the Sparks brothers - Nicholas and Micah embarked on the journey of a lifetime.
In Three Weeks With My Brother, Nicholas and Micah open each chapter with a story from their trip that made them reminisce about their past. Since their father was a student when the Sparks children (Micah, Nicholas and Dana) were born, they were poor for most of their childhood. Nicholas didn't know that milk came in a liquid form until he started school. Their mother was vibrant, charismatic and loving, but she raised her children with few rules, causing them to grow up very close. The family had to move several times over the years and the moves were always much easier for outgoing Micah than they were for introspective Nicholas. Nicholas and Micah have had more than their share of tragedies in their lives, but they've also had great triumphs and have learned to appreciate the small things in life.
I found this book to be very readable, enjoyable and emotional. I never knew how driven and hard working Nicholas is. He received a track scholarship to Notre Dame, but he's the first to admit that he's not a natural athlete, but a very hard working one. Nicholas and Micah are very close and they're both family men - dedicated to their wives and their children. From the emotion that comes through in this book, I get the feeling that Nicholas writes from the heart. I recommend this book to all Nicholas Sparks fans and those who enjoy memoirs."
"What a great discovery. I was looking for something new to read at the library and ran across this book. I loved it. Nicholas Sparks, author of The Notebook and numerous other novels wrote this book with his brother Micah. The book is about a three-week trip around the world they took together. I was hooked from the first few pages and couldn't put it down. Their journey takes them to places like Easter Island, Cook's Island, Machu Picchu, India and and the Taj Mahal, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Norway.... Seeing the things they saw through their eyes and hearing about their experinece was really wonderful. I learned many interesting facts about all the things they saw and experienced. It was exciting. The travel experiences, however, were only a portion of the book. Mixed in with all the travel experiences, Sparks tells us the story of his family. I always tend to think that famous and successful people live fairy tale lives. The Sparks borthers have had many, many hard times and many ups and downs in their lives. Through his memoir, you really get to know and love his family - mom, dad, Micah, sister, wife, children. This isn't a book with only happy endings. There are real life experieces that will make your heart ach, make you cheer, make you laugh and most of all give you hope. I loved this book so much and finished it having so much respect and admiration for Nicholas Sparks that I now have a desire to read his books. (Many of them are based on people from his life and his family experiences.)"
"This is one of those books that you oculd read over and over and over and still be in awe when you finish it. It's truly a amazing. I recommend it to anyone. I read it when I ws 11-12 years old and I'm 14 now. Yes, I was young but I started reading adult books early. My grandpa bought the book in a wal-mart when we were on vacation and never read it but I picked it up. I was drawn to it only because it's a memoir. It's written very intrestingly. It follows Nicholas Sparks and his brother, Micah on a 3 week tour around the world. It flips back and forth to the present when they are on the trip and to the past which is their childhood and up on through the years. So one chapter they will be telling you about his sister having a brain tumor and then the next they will be on a mountain in machu pichu. It's not a book that's highly addictive but you want to read it and you can't speed through it since it can be very emotional. I'm thinking of reading this again, now. :)"
