Description: March Violets; The Pale Criminal; A German Requiem. First editions. An outstanding series of detective novels which eclipses everything the author has done since. Each volume is inscribed on the title-page: ''For Ian-Philip Kerr''. Heads of spines of first and last volumes slightly bumped. A fine set in fine dustwrappers slightly creased at the edges, the first and second being price-clipped. read more
"Classic detective stories (complete with Bogartesque private eye jargen!) set in my favorite city during one of history's most fascinating if gruesome times, Nazi Germany. I like!"
"I'm not a huge fan of the hard-boiled style. I think too often authors fall into cliches trying to out-do the masters, Chandler and Hammett. But I was intrigued by the premise of Philip Kerr's Berlin Noir books--hard-boiled private detective plying his trade in pre-WWII, Nazi-controlled Berlin.
The first of the three books in this volume, March Violets, was a good read, once I got past the extreme overuse of mixed metaphors. Everything in every sentence was like something else, as if Kerr was trying to prove his noir cred by coming up with the most outrageous tough-guy metaphors. Still, the plot was sufficiently complex without being confusing and the vision of Nazi Berlin on the eve of the 1936 Olympiad was fascinating.
I haven't read the other two yet, but I will, even though I'm a bit disappointed that book three on are set in *post-War* Germany. There are lots of mysteries set during and after WWII; I was drawn by the promise of a glimpse at what led up to the war."
"Three great novels in one book, all set in Germany and told by Berliner private detective Bernhard Gunther. The first novel, MARCH VIOLETS, is pre-World War II Berlin; the second one, THE PALE CRIMINAL, takes place during WWII; and the third, A GERMAN REQUIEM, takes place mainly in Vienna after the war. In each story, Gunther meets at least one high-ranking real-life Nazi (Himmler, Goering, Heydrich, Muller) and is called upon in various capacities to serve their ends. Gunther is not only smart but also clever, wise-cracking, disapproving of the Third Reich, and--as a former "bull," or policeman--always pursuant of justice, but he wants to earn money as well. It is not until the third book, when he finds himself up against a wily Russian officer, that Gunther faces regret for never before having placed his country before himself and for never having taken a stand against the Nazis.
Author Philip Kerr is British but clearly has done painstaking research for these stories, placing his readers inside Nazi Germany from the late 1930s through the late 1940s when the Berlin Wall was constructed. Riveting reads."
"Absolutely brilliant trio of mystery / thrillers, starring the downtrodden, cynical yet believable Bernie Gunther. In a Zelig kind of way, he runs into many of the evil lunatics behind the Third Reich, in the years before World War 2. The feeling of being in Berlin before the war is palpable and the thrills just keep coming. You are guessing right up until the end. A Must Read!"
