"Fascinating meditation on what Superman would have been like had he crash-landed in the Soviet Union instead of the United States. We also have some interesting role changes--such as a Jimmy Olsen working for the CIA and Lex Luthor a major weapons industrialist, and considered to be one of the good guys, more or less. Still, we find that the central goodness of Superman is not marred by ideology. He still protects earth regardless of which flag he salutes. This was a good, mind-stretching read."
"Kal-El, sent from his doomed Krypton by his concerned scientist parents, lands on a planet called earth...in a region known as Ukraine. Instead of standing for Truth, Justice and the American Way, Citizen Superman becomes the Soviet secret weapon and the likely successor for the ailing Stalin. Opposed only by the billionaire Lex Luthor, whose wife Lois Lane has fallen under Citizen Superman's spell, The New Stalin (literally, Man of Steel)begins his conquest of the planet as a socialist utopia. The stuff of mythology."
"This was a very interesting take on the Superman tale. Those of us who remember parts of the Cold War and Soviet Union will likely appreciate the history a bit more. Millar's take on the characters is pretty good. It is a comic, but it does have some depth to it. I am not as sure about the somewhat circular ending (which I will not reveal for those who may want to read this). It's the only thing keeping me from giving it the five stars. Unlike True Brit, which I reviewed here as well after reading it, this comic has a serious tone (the British take is more humorous, something I enjoyed too). Overall, I found this a good read, interesting, one that made the reader think of different possibilities. And it does make an interesting commentary, if you read closely, about our current world. Now, if only we could get our act together and solve the world's problems. Now there is a thought."
"Superman: Red son is a very good book that I can't recommend enough. The story focuses around an alternate universe where Superman grows up in Soviet Russia. I won't give away any spoilers but suffice to say many jokes are made by mirroring Superman's American upbringing and traditional past.
Overall the book is extremely well written with a very compelling story showing how the world might possibly be different were Superman not American. In the hands of some authors this book might have been a terrible failure, but Mark Millar pulls it off, creating one of the best alternate reality graphic novels I've read to date. Read it."
