"I read this book because it was on my daughters list of books to read for her health occupations club. I saw the movie first and loved it, of course the book was 100 times better. Probably the three most prominent lessons learned from this book are; Work hard at learning, knowledge is so valuable, Don't make life too easy for your children they learn from hard things and work, and how the hand of the Lord is in all our lives. I found it a valuable tool for parenting, it motivated me to seek the guidance of the Lord more in all things, and I found the surgery stories fascinating. I highly recommend this book and even your younger children will enjoy the movie. (8-10 and up) Enjoy!!!"
"A fascinating read about a poor young black kid from Detroit who has ambitions to be a doctor. After many trials to get through school he eventually becomes a gifted neurosurgeon who performs hemispherectomies - removing half of people's brains as well as other intriguing surgeries like crainiectomies. It's quite amazing that half of a person's brain can be removed and the other brain cells will adapt and the individual can still function. I wish I had read this book with a diagram of the human brain close by.
The highlight of Dr. Carson's career is when he separates the two brains of siamese twins.
I particularly liked that he always stayed by what his Mother had taught him. "If you ask the Lord for something believing that He will do it, then He will do it." Hmmm wonder where I've heard that before?"
"The story of a talented, passion-filled man who overcame childhood obstacles to become a worldclass pedatric neurosurgeon. This true story was interesting but did seem, at times, a bit self indulgent. It wasn't an easy read but was inspiring nonetheless. Dr. Ben Carson is a hero to many and has every right to be proud of his accomplishments. I just wish his story could have been written in a more reader-friendly way. There are many little details in the story that could have been presented in a less tedious fashion."
"Gifted Hands is a must read for any one who wants to be inspired. It's a story about a boy who grows up without his father, and learns how to stand on his own given the relentless support and guidance he receives from his mother who constantly encourages him to never settle for second best. In many ways this is a story about a young man who finds his purpose in life - his hands have been gifted to bring healing as a neurological surgeon. Any young person will come away from this book wanting to be better. In this auto/biography, Ben Carson also includes his personal philosophy for success in life - Think Big!"
