About this title: Jim Lehrer begins this novel in 1918, in an insane asylum in Missouri where a patient named Josh is obsessed with a brutal Civil War massacre that happened half a century ago. As the years go by, Josh and an inmate named Birdie manage to escape the horrors of the asylum, ending up in Kansas City's Union Station. There, in a deserted pantry, Birdie spends the next 64 years as a hermit and railroad buff. When the city begins to restore the station, he is finally discovered by a police detective to whom he tells the strange story of his life.
