"Terrible writing. I recently heard the author Mavis Gallant say in an interview that she doesn't like reading her early writing because she used to be lazier about her language in a way that makes her cringe now. If Amanda Eyre Ward plans to continue her career as a novelist, she might want to start thinking about this sooner rather than later. Her prose is bland and artless. Sadly, so are her characters, each of which is a stereotype: the lonely mother who covers up her grief with overzealous cheer; the married, distanced, pregnant and domesticated sister; the sassy black girlfriend (really!). I skimmed most of it because I wanted to find out how it ended, but the character of the lost sister, as revealed through her letters to someone she met on Alaskanhunks.com, was so weak and annoying that I dreaded the disappointment she would be to her sisters if she ever were reunited with her family.
I was hoping for literature and got chicklit instead. This was a weak novel and I would not recommend it to discerning readers."
"I liked this and it was a fast read. About a family which falls apart after the youngest sister of 3 disappears. Good characterization, and the stories from their childhood really shone. However, about half the book took place in Montana, and a lot of that part just didn't ring true to me (minor quibbles mostly, like - it's U of M, not UMT). And the book ends about 30 seconds *before* the actual resolution of everything - boo.
(Ward was a Williams grad - in my graduating class - though I don't think I knew her.)
(ETA: I see from her Goodreads profile that she actually lived in Missoula for a few years..... I guess I shouldn't be so quick to dismiss her portrayal of Montana - but it just somehow didn't scan to me.)"
"Amanda Eyre Ward is a writer I can depend on. Since reading "Sleep Towards Heaven," I have been on the look out for her books. "How to Be Lost" is a family story, about a girl's disappearance and the impact that has on her mother and her sisters.
The suspense in this book is only one of its pleasures. There are also sweet moments between sisters, self-awareness coming to the narrator of the life she has chosen not to fully live, and the possibility of hope beyond hope at the end.
"I enjoyed this and found it an easy, quick read - I've been looking for those lately after getting bogged down in a couple of longer and more demanding books. I liked the style of writing, but didn't always find the story completely believable and don't think it will stick in my mind for very long."
