The chant-like text ("Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me. Red, Red Bird, what do you see? I see a yellow duck looking at me," and so on) practically begs to be ...

"Summary: The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Genre: Fictional Picture Book Reading Level: This book is best for emergent readers because it contains only short phrases on each page. The font is large and the space between the words is ideal for a beginning reader. Because there is repetition of the phrase, "what do you see" and "I see a... looking at me," this book is emergent. Also, since the illustrations closely match the text, the reader can use every picture as a support. Topic: animals Curriculum Uses: I would read this book aloud to primary classroom of students. I think that they would get involved in this book and be engaged throughout the reading of it. I would also use this book for guided reading. I would put this book in my classroom library so that students could read it independently. Social Issues: diverse children and animals Literary Elements: The primary literary device used in this book is repetition. This can be seen in phrases such as: what do you see, looking at me, and I see. Another literary device that the author used was imagery. Illustrations & Text: The illustrations and the text are very closely related, which can help the reader better understand the story. Because the illustrator used many lively colors, the book is engaging and interesting to one's sense of sight. The illustrations convey the mood of the book and the imagery that the author aimed to create."

The illustrations tell you what each page says, and there are many high frequency words. It could also be a good guided reading book. Social Issues: This illustrations in this book show children from many different backgrounds, it also explains the variety of animals in the woods. Literary Elements: This book uses repetition in saying the animal and asking what do you see? on every other page. By using repetition the book becomes very predictable. illustrations & Text; The illustrations in this book are amazing and colorful. The illustrations and text go together quiet well to make the book. The text discusses an animal and the illustrations show a close up view of the animal, so the reader knows what they look like."
"Much like the jazz song accompanying my worst nightmare, in which every band member plays something different all at the same time, seeing one of my twin daughters approach me out of the corner of my eye carrying "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" brings about a cold sweat and makes me want to reach for a tube of airplane glue and a warm lager. I originally checked this out of our local library for them in the hopes of temporarily weaning them off the glass teat world of Barney, Little People, and Kipper, but little did I realize they would take to it like flies to garbage, memorizing most of it within a few hours. Shortly thereafter, I tried to hide the book but it kept reappearing until the mere sight of it became about as welcome as Roger Clinton backstage at a Marilyn Manson concert. My selfish motives and petty complaining aside, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" is full of colorful pictures, an easy-to-learn rhyming scheme and by its very nature is trance inducing to most kids under the age of 3. For that reason alone, it's a godsend."
