"if you have ever seen the movie "wrist cutters, a love story", the idea was taken from a short story in this book. The book is full of screwed up stories, but its pretty interesting and unpredictable."
"The style of writing here was not your usual short story prose - these are VERY brief chunks of storytelling, but not in the sense of some kind of experimental or ultra-modern style. They're just very short. They're also usually a real downer, but in kind of a nice way."
"I want to give this book five stars as I was absolutely mesmerized by most of these stories. Those who know me know that I love short-short stories anyway, but these were unlike much of what I have read in my lifetime. They are beautiful and bleak.
But, as many others have said in their reviews here on goodreads, there is a very strong racist and homophobic thread running through the characters of nearly all of these stories. I don't know if this is being played out as a statement or if these are traits of the author shining through. (Maybe it is lost on me. Maybe it was lost in translation.) It is primarily this that keeps the stars at 4 rather than 5 for me.
I picked up the book because I had watched and abolutely loved the movie "Wristcutters: a love story." The novella it is based on is what finishes out the book and I am torn. Though primarily the same, they are very different in tone and characterization. I think I can honestly say - for perhaps the first time in my life - that I prefer the movie to the book. At the same time, I definitely prefer the ending of the novella to the film's ending. Not 100% sure how I feel. I may need to read this one again soon."
"I'm not sure if I heard about this author before or after seeing the film "Wristcutters: A Love Story", which is adapted from one of his longer (like 25 pages) stories. But that gives you an idea of his weird material. Most of the stories are incredibly short, ranging from 2 to 4 pages, some more fanciful than others, all rather offbeat and frankly told. You might expect them to show up in some weekly alt paper. The back of the cover says that young modern Israelis feel Keret best represent their generation, but I never got enough of an impression to see why anyone would identify with these stories, nor did I find most of them "laugh-out-loud funny", as did one blurber. I think knowing a bit more of Israel's history and culture might have helped. But man, are these good stories for riding the bus! Little bite-sized chunks of literature, almost like poetry in their brevity, to read between transfers and ponder."
