"I really wish I could blackmail, bribe, force, or otherwise entice everyone I know to read this book. There are very few people who would not benefit from this honest exploration of white privilege and how it's not only harmful to people of color, but to whites as well.
I had to read it for a Sociology class in school, and I know some of my classmates were annoyed at the conversational style of the book, but I felt that was one of its strengths. It was at all times engaging and easy to read, even of some of the material was hard to swallow. A bitter little pill hidden in the sweet treat of some very smooth, very entertaining writing.
It hurts to see the level that racism is perpetuated by the oblivion of "good people," but I think it's necessary, and I love this book for showing it to me."
"A very important book by a sharp critic of the American racial landscape. I accept his central thesis that whites are extremely privileged in this society, and that this is to the detriment of people of color. Where the book falters is in some of the examples the author cites as evidence of white privilege. It can be very difficult to prove that a person's race played a role in a given situation when the topic of race is never actually voiced in that situation. So Wise makes assumptions about how race may have factored in a number of areas relating to his life, and for all I know, he may be right. But he may also be misreading his own history, and that's where his argument is weaker. Overall, however, Wise's is a unique perspective that all white Americans would do well to consider."

He chronicles how white privilege affects his life, from his family's history to his work as an anti-racist activist, and makes white people think about how privilege has affected us individually and collectively. I'm embarrassed to realize how little I've thought about this. He argues how white privilege not only obviously hurts people of color but also prevents white people from being truly human. I wish I had read this book a long time ago."
