About this title: Originally published in 1974, this highly regarded text -- the only comprehensive account of American social welfare history from the colonial period to the present -- has been updated to include the latest events and scholarship on the subject. Topics new to this sixth edition include President Clinton's health-care reform and its failure; his efforts to "end welfare as we know it"; recent developments in child welfare, especially the escalating youth crime and poverty rates; AIDS and the reappearance of tuberculosis; and the impact of Murray and Hernstein's The Bell Curve. "I enjoyed reading this book, although it was for my Social Policy Class. I have to write a Seven page paper on it, which I am doing now. Overall, the book gives a historical viewpoint on welfare system in America, and shows us how we have changed since then."
"I'm not sure why others gave this book 3 stars or less. I really enjoyed how it was written. Yes it was assigned for a social work class, but I did enjoy it. I liked how it was simply written and how he summarized sections of history. Another thing I REALLY liked was the amount of references listed at the end of each chapter. That is really helpful and much appreciated. Of course each historian views past events through their own lens (and the lenses of other historians). If anything, I enjoyed and understood his "lens" so to speak. The last two or three chapters were more about individual presidents rather than social welfare activists. So if you're looking for current social welfare policy, this is not the book for you. But if you're interested in an introduction to social welfare policies from late-1800s to mid-1900s, this is a great read."
