"I just sat down in the library one day and read this book and cried at the end.
This is such a touching little story! I cannot believe some libraries have banned it simple because the family is made up of two male penguins.
I would like to thank Justin Richardson, Peter Parnell, and Henry Cole for this fantastic book! It was well written and contained a very touching story. I think, as an ally of the LGBTQIA community, this book gives me a little hope for something. The way the authors and illustrator presented the two male penguins in such a loving and positive light made me feel happy. This book also shows that homosexuality is not something that is a choice or something made up by those who fall under that category, it is something that exists in all forms of life. Isn't it great that love can have no boundaries? I sure think it is!
Well done Justin, Peter, and Henry! This is probably my new favorite children's book!"
"This was the #1 banned book of 2008 -- a children's story (and a true story, might I add) about two male penguins at the Central Park zoo who raise a baby together. It's a very sweet story, and it's nice to see homosexuality presented in such a normal way. It also throws yet another wrench into the ridiculous "homosexuality is unnatural!" argument, which, I imagine, is part of the reason it's so frequently banned. Ridiculous. I'm definitely buying this book for my future hypothetical children.
As a side note, I'm happy to report that after reading it out loud in all five of the college classes I teach, the feedback I got from 90% of my students was that it's stupid how frequently this book is banned."
"Yes, technically I haven't read this book. But considering it's a childrens book and I've read the reviews, I'm pretty sure I understand the general premise. This is truly ridiculous. People say that "hatred and racism are dead, a black man is president." This is very not true. It is also true that stupidity is not dead. This book does not have the penguins marry, it does not say that the penguins love each other, it is just giving the cold hard facts, about two penguins. Also, concerning my first point, practically everyone is against gays marrying, interacting, being gay, talking about being gay, ect. This is ridiculous. I personally don't think that homosexuality is particularly useful to a society, but it is just plain stupid to not let gays marry. The state doesn't lose anything, other people don't lose anything. As Albert Einstein said "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the first one.""
"I would rate this book at one and a half stars. Justin Richardson makes an interesting concept in this book, most interesting of all because the story is true. I found the author's note at the end of the story to be edifying and fascinating, and the fact that one can visit the Central Park Zoo in New York (or at least COULD visit it in 2005, when this book was initially published) and see Silo and Roy and Tango for themselves makes for a uniquely (potential) interactive reading experience. The impetus behind "And Tango Makes Three" is certainly very different, but the book can be enjoyed for what it is, I think."
