"Great second book! Lydia's first year at the Good Yarn shop went well. Margarite had some financial troubles when her husband was laid off for 6 months and Lydia proved to herself that she was independant by securing a loan to save her sister house. Lydia and Brad have some rough patches in their relationship because his ex-wife wants another shot at a "family" for their son Cody. A new group of lady's signs up for a sock knitting class. Courtney, a high school senior who was transplanted from Chicago to seattle after her mother's death and her father's need to work in Brazil for a year. She is living with her grandmother and is trying to find herself again and make new friends, but after her mother's death she turned to food for comfort and is overweight and self conscience. Elise is a divorsed, retired librarian who is living with her daughter's family after her retirement money was taken in a scam. Her ex-husband of 37 years was a professional gambler and she still loves and misses him. Bethanne, is a mother of two teenagers and recently divorced after her husband admits to a two year affair and then walks out. Bethanne is trying to find a job to support her and help provide emotional support to her children that aren't adjusting well. The knitting class dynamic is hot at first, but then like last time the women come together and help each other through their adjusting periods. Elise's husband becomes everyones Fairy godfather."
"I picked up this book at the library because of my love of knitting. I loved the book jacket's "promise" of women bonding and developing lasting friendships through a common interest. However, I was disappointed. I found this book too simple and contrite for my tastes. While the story's concept was great the character development of each women was suggested. I think the author missed the chance of really focusing on one character's personal struggles, letting us really know that one woman and perhaps involving the others as supporters to her as she struggled. I'm not sure I'll read another novel by this author."
"A really sweet book, perfect for sitting out on a porch swing on a beautiful summer afternoon. Which is what I did with it. The story was a meandering plot, without a great deal of tension. However, what keeps one reading is the enormous amount of concern for the characters, one wants them to do well in all they can. I adored all of the characters, even those that I didn't think I could like.
I do admit that I cried when Brad was trying to break up with Lydia. I'm a sucker for failing (or sadly broken off) romances."
This is the second book in the Blossom Street series. Things are going well for Lydia, the owner of A Good Yarn. Her romance continues to develop with Brad, a UPS driver. She and her sister Margaret enjoy working together. She decides it is time to offer anther class. This one is on learning how to knit socks.
Three totally different women who seem to have little in common sign up for the classes. There is Elise Beumont, a retired librarian who has had a financial set back and is forced to live with her married daugther and grandsons.
Bethanne Hamlin is still recovering from an unexpected divorce. Her teenage daugther decides she needs to do something for herself and signs her up for the knitting class.
The third class member is Courtney Pulanski, a motherless girl who is currently living with her grandmother while her father spends the year in Brazil on a work related assignment. Courtney is entering her senior year in a new city feeling very alone. She is also 35 pounds overweight. Her grandmother suggests that a knitting class would be the perfect opportunity to meet new friends.
Soon Lydia Hoffman's "perfect" world begins crashing around her as Brad's wife reenters the picture. It may sounds like this plot is a soap opera, but the way these friends rally around each other as they face their problems provides a very sweet story that I was sad to see end."
