"I loved this Outlander book. It is one of my favorites, along with Voyager and Dragonfly in Amber. This book, like the earlier Outlander novels is action packed. Gabaldon regained her momentum after a mediocre fifth installment (The Fiery Cross). This novel picks up with the Fraser clan on the eve of the American Revolution with Jamie torn between his loyalty to the crown and his knowledge that the rebels would prevail in the American Revolution. As an underpinning to this, the Frasers are haunted by their own fate, thanks to the revelation from Drums in Autumn that Jamie and Claire were destined to perish, childless, in a house fire on January 21, 1776. Do Jamie and Claire really die, or can they change history? Or was the newspaper wrong? If they die childless, what happens to Brianna, Roger, and Jem? Do they die earlier? Did they travel to the twentieth century?
In addition to these interesting questions related to time travel, the novel balances action, romance, history, and details about day-to-day 18th century life. Like Outlander, Dragonfly, and Voyager, the Frasers seem to have used up their 9 lives. They get themselves in harrowing life-death situations with regularity. However, the action is exciting. There are several interesting plot twists as well as resolution of some questions stemming from earlier installments in the series.
Overall, this was a great novel. If you previously read The Fiery Cross and did not enjoy it, Gabaldon is back on track with book #6. I'm looking forward to starting book #7 in the near future."
"The colonies, early 1770's. The time-travelling assorted family members perform surgery, get abducted, survive scandals, and try to prepare for the war they know is coming from their history books.
It's a Gabaldon book; it's, oh, about 400 pages too long, and it's not actually a novel so much as a lot of novellas lined up, with a few threads brought together at the end (in a series of ridiculous coincidences, by the way). But these books are also hilarious in places, with a keen sense for the ridiculous. And Gabaldon has this rich, kinesthetic kind of writing, with a real gift for imagery. Also, Lord John still loves Jamie tragically and beautifully (get the man a boyfriend! Please!).
So basically I skimmed for fun bits of historical richness (Brianna figuring out how to lay water pipes with no metal) or interpersonal hilarity, and went really fast through the bits where someone's been abducted again, sigh. How does her editor let her get away with these monsters?"
"This, I believe, is the 6th in the Outlander Series. I am one that always tries to save the best for last and had this book for quite some time before I picked it up to read. The reason I chose to read it then? I just didn't want the story to end, and thought this was the last book. Then, I got word a new volume was on its way and I had something to look forward to. The stories of Jamie and Claire Fraser never disappoint; they are chock full of history and interesting information and there's always a new adventure around the bend. When Ms. Gabaldon ends the series, I will pick up the first book and will gladly begin the saga again!!! Thank you, Diana, for all the entertainment you've given me!!"
"Erg. I am done with the series, and I have to say that I feel a bit of grief, as though a good friend had moved far, far away, and contact will be tenuous and intermittent instead of constant and local. Ahhhh. I was so bereft -- for almost a week after I finished the book, I read nothing else at night, which is kind of amazing.
Regardless, this one was strong and touching, and I loved it as much as any of the others. I cannot get over what Gabaldon puts her characters through, and yet I love watching them survive, and I love catching myself analyzing their personalities to make sure that everything still rings true. I stayed up late one night finishing it when I really should have been sleeping. My one consolation is that Gabaldon is writing another (perhaps two!) and I will get my fix come September."
