"As Coelho is regarded by some to be one of the best authors of our time, I was excited to read his latest, Zahir. But my first Coelho experience was sadly disappointing. I found the story to be trite and just really un-captivating. The plot (somewhat autobiographical?) had potential. The wife (a journalist) of a fiction writer suddenly disappears after many years of marriage. Did she leave of her own free will? Was she kidnapped? Is she in danger? Alas the intrigue of her mysterious disappearance is pretty well wrapped up by mid-book ...which leaves the rest of the tome to the lead character's (endless) exploration of the (not terribly profound) musings of some mysterious mystic sect before miraculously finding himself and discovering his capacity to truly love.
Blah blah blah.
Perhaps I failed to attain the entrancement necessary to enjoy the book. It did feel a bit like watching, befuddled, a ceremony that others deem emotionally moving. This same book by another author I'd be happy enough to write off as a bad experience never to be repeated. But I have a hard time believing that this is the Coelho that so many have raved about."
"This book was not of the same quality as Alchemist but still presented some noble and elevated concepts as presented in all of paulo's books and perhaps the reason I read his books is that they always tend to feature some sort of spiritual quest. There is also a aspect of Sufism in Paulo's books which make them more eminent.
The unnamed narrator of this story is a writer whose wife, Esther, a war correspondent leaves him suddenly without any information or trace of leaving. When she disappears, he is disturbed by the mystery of what has happened. Has she been killed, kidnaped, or left him for another love. The narrator starts his struggle to find the reason of Esther's disappearance and eventually he realizes that she is the one who fills his life with meaning.
Coelho has not created a master work on the level of Alchemist but still there are some insights on courage needed to reach destiny, risks and possiblities of life and rewards of forgetting personal histories."
"This book was nothing like I expected. The back description was misleading - as a novice traveller I saw that the narrator of the book was going to go through "Spain, France, Croatia" etc in order to find the love of his life. Do not be fooled, there is little to know description of these places. In fact, there is no description of Spain at all. Thoroughly disappointing.
Besides that the book itself was... interesting. I admit it is a much different story than I have ever read and I was given some new ideas and thoughts. However I did not find the end fulfilling nor did I feel a great connection with the main character."
"I picked this up in a bookstore in St Hellier's on a recent trip to New Zealand(like I need more books!)and read it on the plane trip back. I'm quite a fan of Paulo Coelho's work but in my humble opinion this is not one of Paulo's greatest works. My main problem with the novel was that despite the theme of love and its eternal energy that we are indirectly urged to embrace, the central unnamed character gives the impression of a man with somewhat shallow feelings; he has been married three times or more and even in his latest marriage he concedes to occasional acts of infidelity which in my view serve to undermine his credibility as a man worthy of the woman he is married to. He finds new 'love' not long after his wife's unexplained disappearance and continues to flirt, or invite sexual encounters, so I for one felt unattached to his emotional dilemma. I found his selfishness and self-absorption to be very irritating. I also didnt get the sense of his character transforming and the storyline just seemed to meander without much clarity. Although there are several settings throughout the book I never felt like there was any depth to them. Paris didnt feel like Paris etc. I was also perplexed as to the significance of "The Lady" and the topic of immaculate conceptions. The whole book was a bit disjointed, repetitive and dissapointingly vague for my tastes. I read this book to learn more about love and came away from the experience without a great sense of having learned anything new."
