"The writing is a bit uneven - feels like a collection of articles and essays - but the story keeps you reading. Similar to Shackleton's expedition, some of their experiences were unimaginable."
"If you want to read a real story of adventure in the Amazon jungle that rivals even the most active fiction writer's imagination, read this book. Teddy Roosevelt, after surviving an assasinnation attempt during his bid for a third U.S. presidency (and losing), embarked on an unfathomable journey to most of us in today's modern world of conveniences, to explore a then-unknown, unchartered dangerous river deep in the Amazon jungle previously called, by Brazilian Explorer Rondon, The River of Doubt. What an apt name for the river and the book! Equally impressive to Roosevelt's character in this book, and perhaps moreso, is his counterpart Rondon.
Look up the river on Google Maps, and it is now called Rio Roosevelt.
This is the most incredible true story of physical endurance in the wild that I have encountered to date. And to think the adventurer and former President of the United States who took this journey had once been a person plagued with illness and physical weakness will give any reader a desire to try to reach a little higher and accomplish a little more."
"In 1913, following an unsuccessful reelection bid, former President Theodore Roosevelt planned a trip to South America that would include an exploring expedition. What started out as a rather tame itinerary, however, was changed to a trek down an unexplored tributary of the Amazon River. Along with his son, Kermit, and others including General Candido Rondon of Brazil, the exploring party was challenged by inadequate gear and supplies, heavy and unwieldy boats, threats from insects and other dangerous wildlife, disease, a member of the party who stole rations, and being stalked by cannibalistic natives, in addition to the dangers of descending the river itself. Roosevelt became injured during the trip and nearly died. This is an interesting look at the personality and character of TR and a fascinating adventure tale set in the jungle, told by a former National Geographic writer. The book was a bit slow to get started, but became more interesting as the story progressed. Lots of fascinating detail about the jungle. I admired Rondon and Kermit."
"Incredibly well-written. Just the right amount of detail about the region and the potential dangers to the Roosevelt expedition, blended perfectly with personal (both heartwarming and repulsive) details about the men on the journey."
