"This book explores the relationships between woman and the important roles they play in each other's lives. Annie Freeman dies after a battle with cancer. Instead of a traditional funeral, she wishes to have her ashes spread by 5 of her dearest friends. The only catch is that these woman have never formally met. Each has played an important part in Annie's life at very different stages of her life. The funeral is to take 1 week and cover 5 different locations in the United States. Annie has thought of everything and made virtually all the arrangements. All the woman need to do is make themselves available.
It took a while to read this book because I had to be in the right frame of mind. It was funny at times and thought provoking at others. With the recent passing of a great uncle, it hit home more than it might have at other times. One thing it spoke to me was the importance of not allowing yourself to get bogged down in the day to day, but to realize that the important things are relationships. The story was written in a slightly different way than I had experienced before, but I can't quite put my finger on "how". It just felt different when reading. Overall, a good book with some interesting characters. The most interesting was probably the one we never heard from. . .Annie!"
"I just finished this book today and what a let down. I loved this book up until about page 200 when it got a little to far fetched even for my "chick-lit" loving self. I mean really, who starts a congo line at an airport where passengers are stranded due to a storm??? Too many things feel into place for these "pallbearers" but I guess that is just my synical side coming out. I did learn that life is too short to worry about the kids making thier beds just right and the dishes being done my way...so I guess that is the positive side to reading this book. I did cry about 4 times reading this book and will read more of Kris Radish's books in the future. Its not that I hated this book, I liked it and I would recommend it to a friend, but just ended way to fast- felt that there was more story to be told."
"This book was filled to the brim with too much She-Ra touchy feely woman power. If the "women are awesome automatically" vibe were a bit more understated, I might've actually liked it. The central idea--that Annie Freeman would command the women most important to her adult life to carry her ashes to all of the places that meant the most to her life--is intriguing, and the few moments that rang true were simply lovely. There was just too much author proselytizing woven in and over and around those moments. She would show, and then tell and tell and tell. I was very disappointed, although I did enjoy the last couple of chapters much more than the rest of the book."
"First book I've read by this author, but one I will search out in the near future. This book was a wonderful, quick read...and kept me alternating between laughing and crying! We all need girlfriends like the ones portrayed in this book!
Annie of course, if you can't guess by the title, has died of cancer...and which she has many friends, they don't know each other...Annie is the common bond between them all. Before Annie dies, she comes up with a very unique way to pull these women, her girlfriends together! She succeeds completely.
Definitely a feel-good book about the love and friendship we all need in life!"
