"I really enjoyed this book by Sarah Dunant. I have read her before with the Birth of Venus and I felt like this was a more mature novel. I enjoyed the perspective of Bucino because he was really an outsider giving us his perspective of this lavish world of Fiammetta. I think that it was easier as someone who has no ties to this period to look from his point of view. I also really enjoyed the character of La Draga, she was incredibly inventive and had my guessing from her introduction up until the last 100 pages of the novel. The politics and detail of the period was lavishly laid out and described and all in all it was a great historical fiction read that I would recommend."
"I probably wouldn't normally read a story about a courtesan but I've had a love affair with anything Venetian for over thirty years, so the setting intrigued me.
The author magically transports us to Venice in the 16th century by her wonderful characterizations and the authentic descriptions of that magnificent city. Written in the "voice" of the dwarf, Bucino, who manages the courtesan's career, you feel only sadness for this unlikely couple. After the fall of Rome to the Germans, the only way they can manage to make a decent living is to flee to Venice, Fiammetta's hometown, and continue with their amoral lifestyle. There are problems to overcome and the fact that Bucino turns down the offer of his lifetime, shows the love he has for the beautiful Venitian. There are no graphic sex scenes if that is what one is looking for. What is distressing to me is that the story portrays the all-too-common fate of a woman of that time with no family to help her. And it is not only in past history that such things occurs."
"Reminded me a bit of "Water for Elephants." Gritty, raw... repulsive at times... but with excellent character development. This historical fiction book was recommended to me by a substitute teacher at the end of this last school year, and I just now got around to picking it up. I'll definitely be checking out more of Sarah Dunant's work--it was a good change of pace for me. Still historical fiction, still a peek into social classes and societal roles, but set in Venice instead of my "usual" location, London."
"I enjoyed Birth of Venus, also by Dunant, but this book was better by far. In the Company of the Courtesan has all of the lush period detail of Birth of Venus, but the story line and characters are better developed and more interesting. I loved the quirky main characters: a young girl raised as a courtesan who loses everything but her life during the sacking of Rome, a dwarf who is her companion, friend and business partner, and a blind and deformed healer whose story is a mystery. Setting and plot draw the reader into the adventures of these marvelous characters."
