"My 5th grade teacher read this one to me too. It is about four kids that invent a homework machine that does all the work for them. They had to each write one letter of the alphabet. They would always get a couple wrong on purpose. In the end, people started to find out so they had to get rid of their machine. They decided to launch it into the desert so that the F.B.I. wouldn't know. They eventually found out and they got in trouble. This book has really reminded me to just do my homework even though it is a great idea to make a machine. P.S. I would SO do that with my friends!!!"
"Has Dan Gutman ever been to Arizona? Does he know anyone in the US Air Force? Has he been to the Grand Canyon? The answer to all of these questions has to be "NO!" or his book would be much more entertaning - and reaslistic. The story is strange, the setting is unbeleiveable, the characters are wooden sterotypes and their behavior is unlikely. On a positive note: my children liked the book."
"Good choice for a Iowa Children's Choice. I really liked the format of the book. Gutman used numerous characters perspectives to help tell the story of a small group of 4 students who come together to protect their secret...they have a homework machine! The four students, their teacher, other students, a few moms, and a police detective all join in to tell the story of how these four 5th graders become unlikely friends because of a computer they call Belch."
"Multi-voice format works well here as a group of 4 extremely different 5th grade students who discover friendship while engaging in a somewhat nefarious scheme. Clever idea - I had been hesitant because of Danny Dunn - but I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read. Good for reluctant readers, boys especially. Almost 150 pages so it meets some of the book report rules. It also fits into the humor category."
