"I enjoy reading Michener. Caribbean is not his best, but it is an enjoyable read. Each chapter can stand alone if you are so disposed to put it away without reading the whole book. But the final chapter draws the whole together. I've never been that interested in the Caribbean islands, but after reading this volume of historical fiction of the area, I think I might like to visit there after all."
"This book was one of the longest books I have ever read. It took me about 2 months. Although fairly intersting, it can be a little more wordy than necessary. Kind of like listening to that person tell you an intersting story at a party but, they don't realize they should leave out brushing their teeth or opening the door if it doesn't have any specific meeaning to the story. After you understand that Michener can ramble and is just a rambler at heart, it becomes less difficult to read because you stop looking for the hook on every detail.
Before you get the wrong impression, this isn't a negative review, just a buyer beware, "know the nature of the beast." I actually liked it a lot. At the same time, I have travelled the Carribean and I am familiar with the culture, history and geography, therefore I recognize and understand much of the things that may seem ambiguous to the unfamiliar reader. He puts a fictional twist on and fills in the blanks of the history and culture of the Carribean. It's well worth the read for someone who is familiar with the area."
"Stopped reading in the middle of the 4th vignette/novella. Dialogue throughout was anachronistic, making it very difficult to "sink in" to the characters and scenario. Situations didn't seem very believable either. I understand the book to be founded on significant historical research, but I guess I wasn't convinced."
"How's this for "beach reading"? I actually read this while on a Caribbean cruise. It was interesting to see some of the islands firsthand and compare them to what I was reading. While tendered near Haiti, I could imagine the pirates in all the little hidden coves and up in the secluded hills."
