When Motley Crue was at the height of its fame, there wasn't any drug Nikki Sixx wouldn't do. "It took my months to find this book, every book store in the area was sold out for the longest time, and I was so relieved when I finally found it.
This book made me really think about my family and some of there bad habits. I am intending on purchasing this book for my brothers and I hope that it helps them realise a few things.
I would recommend this book to anyone, although it is not for the weak of heart. It has some moment where you think to yourself "how could anyone survive that!""
"Eh. I've read a bunch of addiction memoirs and this was the least interesting so far. In the introduction, Sixx says that if he can help one person kick their addiction, then creating the book was worth it. In my opinion, the only thing Sixx helped with was making his bank account grow. The book presents the actual diary of Sixx from the mid 80's when Motley Crue was touring. It's basically just a mishmash of whining, drug use, sex, and Sixx acting like a complete jerk most of the time. Sixx recognizes that he has a problem, but really does nothing to deal with it until he almost dies...and even then he continues to use drugs.
I understand that addiction is rooted in deeper issues, but Sixx just comes across as self-indulgent, self-absorbed, and totally spoiled. The most interesting parts of the book were the comments made by other people, like Tommy Lee and Crue's former manager. If you're a fan of the band (which I am not) you might find it interesting to learn the behind-the-scenes debauchery. As an addiction memoir, however, there's nothing redeeming or enlightening about it."
"Written by Motley Crue bassist, Nykki Sixx, The Heroin Diaries is exactly as it sounds, a copy of the diary he kept for one year while deep in the grip of a heroin/cocaine addiction. Superbly written, and brutally honest, you don't need to be a fan of Motley Crue in order to enjoy this book. The diary starts in December, 1986. At this point, Motley Crue is about to reach the apex of their meteorical career. It's Christmas Day, and Sixx is contemplating the fact that he's alone, crouched naked under a Christmas tree with a needle in his arm. Contemplating suicide, his self-pity and loathing set the tone that will carry through the rest of the book.
Anyone who's ever been involved with deep addiction will immediately recognize Nykki's rapid, lighting-fast mood changes throughout the book. He constantly cycles through grandiosity, self-loathing, rightgeousness, depression, morbid humor, and fear that he will be a slave to his addiction for the rest of his life. His ability to write and capture the essence of what he feels while on "junk" is startling. The book has moments of sheer poetry, which keeps the reader engaged despite the repetive nature of the diary entries.
Nykki's intent in publishing the diary was for it to be a cautionary tale, a warning of the dangers that heroin brings. Here he fails miserably. By including specific instances of his rock-star experiences while using heroin, he often makes the use of heroin sound glamourous and exciting, rather than the destructive force it is. In one passage, he describes lining groupies up against a wall, six or seven in all. His band members put a line of cocaine on each girls rear, snort the line, enter the girl and pump a few times, and then proceed down the line...snorting more coke and screwing more girls.
Sixx also drops juicy tidbits on fellow rockstars. The band members from Aerosmith, Guns & Roses, and other big '80's rock bands factor heavily into the book. Modern-day commentary on certain passages adds a nice reality-check to the story, as well. Honest, stark, touching, depressing, and humoruous, the Herion Diaries is a powerful story from a rather surprising source, and one you'll never forget."
