"Fascinating. I wanted to know why pirates have been so romanticized and this book helped explain it. For example, the author explains that the crew's mortality rates on slave ships was almost as high as that of the slaves themselves. Sailors were very often "pressed" or kidnapped into service. Captains often used severe corporal punishment for minor infractions. So, many sailors, when a pirate crew took over their ship would run off with them. When they joined the crew, they were entitled to an equal share of the loot--the captain (unlike in a privateer ship) would only have a small percentage more. Except in battle, the crew voted democratically in decision making. Although the pirates traded in captured slaves, freed blacks were usually treated as equals, entitled to equal shares of the take. With some exception, the captains were not cruel to captives but usually released them, often with a ship to travel with, once they had taken valuables. 9/09"
"A disappointing mix of historical evidence and the author's great fantasy that each of the great pirates were, in some way, bound to each other by fate. A decent read, if you are willing to bring your sieve and chuck out what obviously should have been left out."
"Very boring. Did not keep my attention enough for me to finish it which is very surprising because I dig history, particularly this period. There were some interesting tidbits in there but they were lost among the humdrum narrative."
