"I apologize for the fact that this is not so much a review as an inquiry. I noticed what I believe to be a wrong note right at the beginning of this performance, but I cannot find evidence on the Internet that anyone else has observed this.
I am confident that the first note played by the bass instrument in the first movement (I believe it is the harpsichord) is an A when it should be a G sharp (in Movable Do system, a "Fa" when it should be a "Mi"). I believe this is a mistake for three reasons: 1. The note A is not present in the E major triad, which would be the expected chord at the beginning of a piece in the key of E major. 2. The note A creates a dissonant major seventh interval with primary melody note, G sharp, something which would only rarely happen in this kind of music, and never right at the beginning of such a consonant movement. 3. The note is corrected in the second measure and beyond, where the rightful "Mi" sounds much more consonant and correct.
I do not criticize the performers for this error. In fact, I applaud them both for their exquisite performance in the rest of the piece and because I believe it is quite right that this recording was released despite the mistake in the first chord; this reveals that the recording is of a real live performance, where a mistake is in the past and uncorrectable.
I do not own other recordings of the work, so I would like to verify that the note is a G sharp on other recordings. Finally, I do want to know why it seems as though this anomaly has never been observed before."
