About this title: History is Made at Night has been described as a romantic tragedy, which it indeed is, up to a point. The film begins deceptively in screwball-comedy fashion with socialite Jean Arthur and handsome head waiter Charles Boyer "meeting cute." "This is probably one of the best Romantic films of the 1930's, with four of Hollywood's finest actors...each doing what he or she does best.. Suave, elegant Charles Boyer..The eternal Frenchman..Ethereally lovely Jean Arthur, Naive, vulnerable and slightly "feathery"...described by third star Leo Carrillo as "that silly little American who dances with the naked feet!" Carrillo plays the part of a tempermental Italian Chef with a humourous dignity that keeps farce at bay. Finally, the great Colin Clive...playing the psychopathic husband with a reptilian charm that keeps the soap bubble romance from floating away in the breeze. This was Clive's final performance. He died two months after its release, and his illness shows. His acting, however, remains incisive. This is one of Frank Borzage's best films, and I give "Full Marks" to all involved in its making."
