"A wonderful who-done-it! This multi-layered, multi-textured film is a marvellous evocation of a town on the Mexican border showing the cares and hopes of its people and how the past has such an almost overpowering influence on the present. The murder-mystery snakes through the lives of the excellent ensemble cast and the flashbacks are handled with such an unassuming dexterity that the first time they are experienced takes your breath away!
A number of threads run through the film including the affair between the young sheriff Sam and Pilar, mysteriously forbidden years ago by their respective parents, now on again but with a mystery of its own that is finally resolved at the film's end.
I cannot recommend this film highly enough: intelligent, mysterious and ultimately very satisfying."
