I was taking a course at Princeton on Ornament. This was not on the reading list but it should have been. Be aware that it is a two volume set and you should buy both. One goes from ancient to medieval and the other from the Renaissance to Modern. There are many illustrations and this covers terminology and basics like no other book does. Ornament seems to be an elusive topic in our present day. This fills in the gaps for both artists and art historians. It provides language for the things like running spirals, palmettes, etc. The other valuable book is Language of Ornament by Trilling.
