One of the leading social philosophers of the "Frankfurt School, " the author here seeks to move critical theory out of its political isolation into the mainstream of the modern social sciences. Beginning with a critique of bourgeois philosophy, he moves on to accuse Marx and Marxism of a positivistic strain, which partly accounts for its later mechanistic and totalitarian degeneration.
