As the books were originally issued, I became an avid reader of Asey Mayo, enjoying the Cape Cod atmosphere and the stylish humor of his creator. Leonidas Witherall I knew better from a short-lived radio show, but also in the written text. ( The highly respected stage actor, Walter Hampden, played the character). This, I see from Wiki, was the last of the Asey Mayo series, the 22nd book to be published, and I am afraid not quite up to the standards she generally maintained. She had never aimed at depth in character development nor darkness of story, but there was an orderly quality to the organization and the writing that made both for clarity and real humor arising from the people's ways and the story line. This one seems to me to move from a good beginning in which the action carries along a story line that is going somewhere to the remainder where it seems to drown in the confusion of slapstick and disorganized confusion. Other readers with no, or perhaps blurred, memories of her works, may well find the book funny and rich with odd but human characters...(reader review)
