This story begins with his character basically a non-combatant sent to observe combat against an alien foe who continually manages to defeat the Terran forces. He is forced to train with weapons, martial combat and don a uniform. He is sent to the front lines and dies in combat - but suddenly he is alive again, remembering the details of combat before he died. He avoids dying the same way but dies again to be reborn once more; the cycle repeats and repeats. His character evolves from a coward to a hero, as he constantly battles a seemingly invincible enemy.
