In the case of Gerald Finzi, it is difficult if not impossible to speak of better and worse works. The twentieth century English composer's small but highly polished and deeply felt oeuvre allows no such criticism. One can, however, speak of more and less popular works. Chief among the former must rank his Shakespeare song cycle "Let us Garlands bring" for baritone and piano or, as here, string orchestra, settings of such artistic perfection that even Schubert's setting of "Who is Sylvia?" could not be said to be superior. ...
