Chavez, Fray Angelico. As New. 5 1/2" x 8 1/4" 192 Pages. No defects noted. Interior text pages are flawless. Cover illustration by Peter Hurd. This is an unabridged reprint of the original 1960 Editionwith new notes, hitorical review and foreword. This only novel of distinguished Southwestern writer and historian Fray Angelico Chavez, was originally published in 1960. This facsimile reprint again brings before readers the important and poignant story of the statue of Our Lady of the Macana (Nuestra Senora de la Macana), brought to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the mid seventeenth century. Removed from Santa Fe with very few other vestiges of Spanish colonization during the successful Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1680, the statue has survived in Mexico, where it remains to this day. Using the fascinating story of the statue, the events of the Pueblo Revolt and subsequent Spanish exodus from New Mexico become alive. Included in this edition is a scholarly article on the statue, written by Fray Angelico in 1959. In an attempt to share the story of the statue, and the history of the period, with a wider audience, Fray Angelico wrote the novel. He also illustrated the book. Here, for the first time, both the article and novel are within the same covers. Contents in Four Parts: The High Sheriff's Daughter, The Padres and the Slave, and Kingdom's End. Plus Postlude with Historical Note and New Mexico Historical Review Article. Endpaper maps.
