Huard, M. Louis; Verboeckhoven, Eugene; Lauters; Hendrickx; Le Hon; Schaggeny, T.; Stroobant; Kreins; Van Marrke; Van der... Very Good. Book. 4to-over 9¾"-12" tall. This set in French, complete in 3 volumes, is quarter bound in leather with heavily tooled spines with 6 panels divided by raised bands [also tooled]. Vol. 1 402pp, Vol 2 417pp; and Vol 3 392pp. Forest green spine leather is overprinted red on the title panel, maroon on volume number panel, and remains green on the banding, quarter spine and corner tips on front & back covers. Balance of outside covers has a multi-colored feathered patterned gloss paper. Lovely edition illustrated mostly by M. Louis Huard. 72 full page illustrations throughout the 3 vols. each with a tissue guard. Every chapter begins with a smaller illustration, and most end with a small illustration as well. Each volume lies flat just after the title page, yet all books remain tightly bound with no loose leaves. This set belonged to Gilbert W. Mead whose signature and the date Sept. 9, 1900 appears on the front free endpaper of Volume 1. Mead was President of Washington College from 1933 to 1949. Volume 1 also shows the glue spots on the inside back cover endpaper where a bookplate had been adhered. Volumes 2 and 3 each have a bookplate in the form of a 2" x 3" white label with the engraved name of Theodore H. Mead. In Vol. 2 the label appears on the inside front cover endpaper, and in Vol. 3 it appears, upside down on the inside back cover endpaper. Otherwise the books have no other markings. A very few pages show light foxing near the margins, none affecting text or images. There is moderate rubbing to the paper-covered surface of the outside covers. The outer edges show light wear and most corner tips are mildly frayed. The top edge of the leather only on Vol. 2's spine with front cover is starting to separate for 3/8" of an inch, the same spot on Vol. 1 only 1/4", and on Vol 3 the bottom leather spine edge with front cover for 1/4". Lovely edition with beautiful illustrations, in remarkable condition after over 160 years. Media mail included. Please contact us for priority or international shipping.
