Our America Life and Death on the South Side of Ch
I read this book because it was left at the hotel I work at and I was bored. It was so good. I live near Chicago so it was very interesting to read. It is about two boys growing up in the ghetto in and near the Ida B. Wells projects. The thing that was most interesting, was how wise beyond their years these boys were. I must admit, as a young white woman, it is hard to identify with young black youth. I think we tend to blame the problems of ghettos on all the residents but this book shows you that the problematic people are a small percentage, it's just easier to focus on the bad ones than the good ones. It is like Muslims. People tend to think they are all radicals but they are a small percentage. Just more visible because of the things they do. Bad news spreads quicker than good news. This book should be read by people who are prejudiced so they can see that in the ghetto there are some extremely sensitive, intelligent and wise people who are just trying to survive. They would make it better if they could but no one will give them a chance. Their minds are already made up about them and that is wrong.
