"Many piano teachers and parents have expressed a need for help in applying the principles of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki's philosophy of early music education. This book attempts to fill that need. In addition to a discussion of the Suzuki philosophy and a chapter each on motivating parents and students, we have included three chapters on preparing to be a Suzuki piano teacher, what to do at the first lessons, and how to structure an effective lesson. Since note-reading is an essential part of every musician's training, we have included the program which we are finding very effective. The chapter on technique describes the scale program we use with our students: this program develops a secure understanding and mastery of scales and develops a positive rhythmic sense in the students. The chapters analysing the six Volumes of the Suzuki repertoire identify preview sections (the 'hard parts'! ) and discuss the musical and technical points of each piece: this has been done to help teachers who are suddenly faced with the enormous task of assimilating all of the Suzuki material and to help parents better understand the teacher's goals. It is our hope that this book will help teachers, parents and students grow in an understanding of an apreciation for the philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. "...Bibliography. Index of Pieces.
